When To Have A Professional Mold Test

There are many types of mold. Some are more harmful than others. Only laboratory testing will positively identify the mold you may have. We help our clients identify what type of mold they are dealing with and what they can do to restore their indoor air quality!

laboratory testing toxic mold

At times our customers may not have any visible mold but may be experiencing unusual sickness or smell a musty odor. The possibility of mold spores and toxins in the air can be the cause of the sickness and odor. The only way to know for sure what you’re dealing with and the source of the toxic mold, if present, is to have a professional assessment.

Our mold tests come with lab results and a protocol on how to remove the mold. If you attempt to remove the mold on your own, it is important to know that when mold spores are disturbed, the spores can be distributed throughout your home. This causes a bigger problem and greater exposed area than what you initially started with. While we do not do mold remediation, we can make recommendations on professionals that do.

What Other Types of Mold Testing Do We Offer?

ERMI Testing (Environmental Relative Moldiness Index)

Through a specific dust collection taken in the home, we can evaluate how your home measures up in comparison with all other homes on the Index. It measures 36 species of molds, 26 of which are associated with water damage and 10 of which are not. Research has linked a higher index number with increased health concerns. However, since the EPA testing is conducted for research purposes only, we recommend this be conducted in conjunction with air testing during our assessment to produce an accurate protocol for the home. Another advantage of having an ERMI test done is finding out the historical perspective of the mold contained in the home.

EMMA Testing (Environmental Mold & Mycotoxin Assessment)

This test is also taken from a specific dust collection in the home and tests for the DNA of 10 most common human pathogens (including Candida auris) as well as 15 of the most harmful Mycotoxins discussed in peer review literature. These are Aflatoxins- B1(most carcinogenic), B2, G1 and G2, Ochratoxin A, Macrocyclic Trichothecenes, and Gliotoxin. These are clinically significant molds and toxins that are found in the environment and will indicate if the spore count detected in the environment is significant as well.

Do You Need A Mold Test?

Here are the REASONS for a mold test:

  • When visible mold is not present, but the smell of mold is present. Here a mold inspection and mold test can reveal whether there is actually elevated mold, and where it is located.
  • There have been plumbing leaks or water intrusions and there is a suspicion that elevated mold may exist in the air and/or behind walls.
  • Post Mold Removal Clearance Testing to ensure that the previous mold issues have been resolved and mold counts have returned to levels found in normal environments of the same type.
  • Health Concerns: At times doctors recommend mold testing because their patient has a health issue that they cannot pinpoint the cause but seems to be related to mold symptoms (coughing, sneezing, headaches, other allergy type symptoms). Here, a mold inspection and test may help to confirm whether the doctor’s or patient’s suspicions that a mold problem exists. Knowing the type of mold your dealing with can help the doctor know how to address your health concern.
  • For real estate transactions for the protection of buyers and sellers.
  • Landlord/Tenant disputes as to whether there is a mold problem
  • Someone thinks they see or smell mold but are not sure.
  • Someone is interested in a general Indoor Air Quality test of their environment.
